Churches

Filipinos who were here first.jpeg

Young Filipino men dressed up and sent pictures to their families in the Philippines to show that they were making money and prospering in Stockton.

The church in the Filipino community focused on political and social issues. Before any churches became involved in the Filipino communities of Stockton, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, the communities were viewed as immoral and out of control. Catholics and protestants saw that the community needed a religious influence and took action! As reverend Sebastian N. Inosanto recalled, “in the early years, there was no Catholic project among the Filipinos in Stockton. Fortunately, a few brave dedicated Protestants saw the need for a Mission to reach out to the spiritual and physical needs of the Filipinos".
